Cameron's Adult
Sunday School Classes
If you are not currently a member of one of the adult classes, we invite you to give
our four classes a try at 9:15 Sunday mornings. The following is a recap of the classes
and short bio of their teachers:
Friendship Class
This class meets in the Bride's Room across the hall from Skelton Hall on the upper
level of the education building. Marilyn Garber states, "I do not feel as though I
teach the Friendship Class. We are all teachers in the class. We learn so much from each
other." The class usually studies the "Adult Bible Studies" material, but
deviate now and then to discuss a thought provoking book that everyone reads. Marilyn
feels that the class has become very important to each of its members. The class offers a
great learning opportunity, but members also share their joys, concerns, and their love.
They are a family! And, as in any family, they do not always agree and have differences of
opinion. But it is beautiful to see how the differences are accepted and they love to come
together each Sunday in God's presence. They are also a family that is still growing and
very willing and excited to have new family members join them.
Marilyn Garber hails from Kansas and has been a member of Cameron for 34 years. Over
these years she has served on every committee and board of Cameron except the Trustees.
Marilyn is also active in Cameron's United Methodist Women and has held leadership offices
both at Cameron and on the District level. She has quite a few stories to add to the
Friendship Class discussions from her students as she is a Fairfax County high school math
teacher. She and her husband, Allan, have a young adult son.
Christian Focus Class
You are invited to join the Christian Focus Class which meets in Room 6 on the lower
level of the education building. The class is an intergenerational class which explores
the application of scripture to everyday life in the 21st century. This is done through a
variety of sources. All opinions are welcome and the class often finds itself in a lively
discussion on the morning's topic. And, the class provides in-class coffee. So come
participate or have a cup of coffee and listen to the discussion.
The class is led by Barbara Turpyn, who is currently a student at Wesley Theological
Seminary. She is a lifelong Methodist/United Methodist from the mid-west who first joined
the class at the invitation of Cameron's Diaconal Minister nearly 25 years ago. He said
the class needed a "coordinator" to schedule rotating teachers. Barbara has been
"coordinating" the short schedule since that time. New ideas and class leaders
are always welcome and both will find a warm welcome to accompany the cup of coffee in the
class.
Children and Youth Sunday School
Live B.I.G. is the curriculum which will be used in the children's classes this
fall. It's based on three big truths: God is great big God. God loves us with a
great big love and we are part of God's great big world. The fall quarter will
focus on Bible heroes who teach us that God chooses ordinary people to make a difference
in God's world. Some of these heroes are Moses, Samuel, David, and Matthew.
Junior and Senior Highs will begin their Sunday School time on September 12 at
9:15. Senior Highs will be meeting in room 8. Junior Highs in room 11.
