THE JEREMIAH PROJECT 2001

The youth would like to thank everyone for their support of us going to The Jeremiah Project again this year. We love doing mission work and we love our Jeremiah Project Peeps (friends and staff).

The Jeremiah Project was founded in 1997 by three Youth Ministers from the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church. Todd Allen Freneaux, the Rev Abi Foerster, and Barbara Russell all felt there was tremendous need for a high-quality, Christ-centered mission trip experience designed specifically for Junior High youth. Selecting Jeremiah 1:7 from the Old Testament of the Bible as their foundational scripture, the Jeremiah Project was born.

The participants that go to Jeremiah not only serve by the work they do, but also in the mission of the heart. They get the chance to sit with many of the people they are helping. These people are almost happier to have the company than the work, and the kids really get a lot out of it too. They also work hard scraping, painting, power- washing, yard work and house cleaning. The hardest thing is the “POST HOLE DIGGIN!” They have to dig some holes 3 feet deep and 16 inches wide to pass code. Many of those holes are in rock filled soil. So when Britt says “LET’S DIG SOME POSTHOLES!” Everyone yells “YEAH!”

This year was the fourth year Cameron UMC has been taking junior high kids to the Jeremiah Project (since its beginning). We had 9 of our youth and 3 adults go to Winchester, Virginia for the mission trip this year. We should have even more next year. We can’t wait.

We want to keep the spirit of mission work in our young people, but many of us are getting too old to go to Jeremiah. We are now looking for a Senior High mission project for our older youth. Maybe next year we will have two youth mission trips. It is so exciting to see our Youth Ministry growing.
