UPCOMING EVENTS AT CAMERON

VBSreport.gif (7233 bytes)VBS Wrap-Up

Vacation Bible School (VBS) happened 28 June - 2 July 2010. Thank you to all the volunteers that helped make this an awesome week. Without you it would have never happened. The children had a wonderful time as we converted Cameron to Hero HeadQuarters!! At Hero HeadQuarters, the kids met Bible heroes who are often overlooked. In fact, they didn't know a single one of their names! Now they do - just ask them!! These unlikely heroes were not famous leaders or called by God to perform amazing miracles-yet their small acts were used by God to do wonderful things!! Again, thank you to everyone who had a part in making this week happen for the children - you are my Heroes!!!

Blessings to you all,
Anna Miller

 UMW NEWS

WomensNews.gif (8574 bytes)In recognition of their time and effort to help make Cameron Church a pleasing place for everyone, UMW Special Membership Pins were awarded to Jim Carman, Kelly Castillo and Trevor Specht on Women's Sunday. We appreciate all the things you do! Congratulations!!!

UMW Members--Looking for some good summer reading? Check the book table as you enter Skelton Hall. Special books and Response Magazines are there for you to choose. Nearby is a book cart full of other good books--humor, inspiration, fiction, faith, information on many things and people. Whether you are reading for pleasure or for information, keep a list of what you read, including Response Magazines, so that our Unit can receive credit in the District Reading Program for all the books we read.   If you have suggestions for books to order, please contact Nancy Williams. So, grab a book, grab a candy bar (or some celery), and settle down for a reading adventure!

From the Music Director

The American Guild of Organists (AGO) is a professional organization of musicians who serve churches and synagogues. I have been a member for many years, but have never had the opportunity to go to an AGO convention until last month. The National Convention was held in D. C. from July 4-8, and I attended with over 2,100 organists from all 50 states as well as members from 16 countries. What an amazing experience! From the opening convocation Monday morning at the National Cathedral, to the opening concert Monday night at the Cathedral, to the recital by well known organist David Higgs at the Navy Chapel in Annapolis Tuesday night, to the hymn festival at National City Christian Church, to the Children’s Worship service, to the six organ recitals by well-known organists held in various D. C. churches—well, I could go on and on. And then there were the many interesting workshops: improvising, historic organs in Argentina (attended because we’ve been to Argentina three times and hope to go again), choral reading sessions, a very interesting one on accessing Public Domain organ music from the Internet. All in all, a very fulfilling, but exhausting week (yes, the record-breaking 102 degrees was part of the week). And, I am renewed!

techersneeded.gif (27143 bytes)Children's teachers are needed for the fall...

Please consider teaching one of the children's classes this fall.  We need at least 4 more teachers to cover each class with 2 teachers who alternate Sundays.  We also need adults who are willing to be occasional substitutes. Training including mandatory child safety (a presentation of Cameron's child safety policy) will be provided for all teachers.  At least 2 choices of training dates will be offered in late August and early September before school starts. Childcare will be available.  Plans are in the works for monthly meetings to include a Bible study, preview of the coming month's lessons and crafts, sharing ideas and an opportunity to take advantage of additional resources available to teachers from materials available in Cameron's collection of books and audiovisuals.  Meetings will start promptly and last no longer than an hour and a half.  There may even be food!   Contact Ann Clites 703-960-4320 or ann.clites@verizon.net if you have any questions or want to volunteer to teach the next generation of Christians!  Pass along your faith!

Six attend Helping Hands mission trip in Midlothian, Virginia

Trent Borchevsky, Julia Deutsch, Jamie Duff, Jamie Lehman, Ann Borchevsky, and Ann Clites attended the Helping Hands event in July.   Many thanks to the congregation for supporting the participants and event with your prayers and donations.  At press time, the group had not yet made the trip.  Watch for an article in the September Beacon that will tell about their experiences.

 MISSION CORNER

Summer is slipping by fast and it’s time to start thinking of school again. Sales will be advertised soon for school supplies and we will be helping RISING HOPE and KOINONIA with supplies for the children again. Bring them in and place items in the box in the narthex and they will be delivered. If you prefer you may take them directly to either or both Rising Hope and Koininia.

While shopping think of MOUNT EAGLE SCHOOL and perhaps put a few things aside. Each month we will again see what their needs are and help them. This need will be put in the Beacon and bulletin each month. Also don’t forget the first Sunday of the month and bring the advertised items for Rising Hope’s food pantry.

Fall will arrive soon and the Mission Committee has several activities coming up so keep watching for them! Thanks for all your participation in all activities

WomensHandbags.gif (21703 bytes)Ladies’ Night Out

GREAT JOB AGAIN CAMERON!

Through the efforts of many people, we took 120 School kits and 98 Health Kits to Annual Conference. The conference calculates the monetary value of these kits in excess of $2,692. We also provided the requested $1 per kit shipping cost for a total of $318 in shipping. Special thanks to all who made this generosity possible. Whether you sewed the bags to hold the school kits, collected items for the kits, or contributed money for the shipping costs, your participation in this mission project supports the work of UMCOR which will deliver these and other kits to individuals affected by disasters both in the United States and around the world.

Some Cameron members collect items for this project throughout the year. If you would like to purchase items for school kits during the Back-to-School sales, you may bring your purchases to the Christian Focus Class where they will be packaged and prepared for donation at the June 2011 Annual Conference. The following items are particularly difficult to find and are expensive without sale prices:

  • Pairs of blunt scissors (rounded tip)
  • 8½ "x 11" ruled paper (tablet or loose leaf)
  • 30-centimeter ruler;
  • large eraser, 2½";
  • 1 box of 24 crayons (only 24).

Cameron also contributed $1,000 to the Annual Conference Offering which is being used to support mission projects in Mozambique, Brazil and our own state of Virginia. Thanks to all!

CONSIDER JOINING THE WOMEN OF FAITH

Would you like to live your life on the mountaintop, seeing the future in neat elegant patterns? But in reality, you keep finding yourself in the valleys, struggling in the present and unable to see a future.

Join the Women of Faith as we explore Patsy Clairmont’s book, "Dancing Bones, Living Lively in the Valley." This study, based on the Old Testament book of Ezekiel, explores the uplifting truth taught to Ezekiel thousands of years ago. With God’s help, "it’s possible for the broken to live – and even dance – in the valley.

Who are the Women of Faith? We are a group of women who gather each Monday morning at 9:30 a.m. in the Bride’s Room to share in fellowship and study the word of God. We nurture friendship and faith and sometimes, just have a good time. We will be restarting our weekly meetings, following a summer break, on Monday, September 20th. We will meet in the upper parking lot (at 9:00 a.m. this week only) and carpool to the IHOP in Manchester lakes to enjoy breakfast together. We would love to have you join us.

If you would like to join our study, it would be helpful to know so we can be sure we have enough books for each participant.

If you have hoped for a small group to connect with other Christians and deepen your spirituality, consider joining us this September. We are here for you, as well as each other as we celebrate each day as part of God’s creation. If you have any questions or comments, please call Barbara Turpyn, H: 703-960-5960 or O: 703-960-9505.

GoodSearch.gif (7512 bytes)FREE MONEY FOR CAMERON

There is a new search engine called www.Goodsearch.com   that donates 50 percent of its revenue to charities and schools designated by its users. Cameron UMC has been recently registered and money is now accruing. Would you like to help increase that total?

Basically, Goodsearch will donate 1 cent for every search made on behalf of Cameron. A penny does not sound like a lot, but the site is all about numbers—the more supporters we can find for our church who are willing to use Goodsearch for their Internet searches, the more money we will raise. For example, if an organization can rally 500 people to use the search engine, and the users do five Web searches a day, the organization could raise more than $9,000 (500 x 5 x 365). If you have a job that requires you to do lots of Internet searches, you could make a BIG impact on these numbers.

To access the Web site, go to www.goodsearch.com. You will see two windows. In the bottom window, enter "Cameron UMC" (without the quote marks) and then hit the "Verify" button. That will confirm the beneficiary of your searches. Save the page to your Favorites or Bookmarks so it will be easily available to you in the future. The site even features a button (Amount Raised) to check on progress.

Won’t you consider a small change in your Internet habits that could make a significant difference to Cameron?
