youth1.gif (21181 bytes)YOUTH KNIGHTS NEWS

As we move closer to the Advent season, the Youth Knights will be looking even further ahead—toward the new year!—with a closer focus on planning some mission projects and organizing some fundraisers in the coming months.

Most weeks we will gather from 5:30 - 7 p.m. at the church for a planned program, but we are also trying to keep things fun and flexible, so be aware that our meeting times and locations may change. We’ll try to keep upcoming events posted on the lower-level bulletin board at the church (right as you walk in to the lower entrance, on the left), as well as in the weekly bulletin and on the Youth Knights page at the CUMC website. We also send word out by e-mail, and if you’d like to be included in that list, please send your e-mail address to Jim Carman at james.carman@wilsoncenter.org.

A few events we hope to have in the coming weeks: we’re organizing a leaf-raking day for the afternoon of November 16, probably from 2 -5 (or however much time you can spare). We’ll be doing yard work for some of the senior members of Cameron. Then on December 13, we’ll try to get a group together to go to Fairfax Ice Arena to play broomstick hockey in a big Bi-District UMC event.

Come check out what we’re doing! All middle- and high-school youth are welcome, and please feel free to bring a friend. For more info, contact Jim Carman at 703-960-8746.

FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR

MusicNotes.gif (1430 bytes)November—a month of special days: All Saint’s Day, Election Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving Day, and the first Sunday of Advent.

Throughout all this busy month, the choirs will rehearse special music for upcoming services, and the Sunday School B. I. G. sing (Sundays at 9:45) will be participating in our 11:00 service. What a joy to have so many willing and energetic singers committed to making music for the Glory of God!

Soli Deo Gloria,
Carol

UMW NEWS

ConsignmentSale.gif (23280 bytes)CONSIGNMENT SALE WRAP-UP

Another very successful children's consignment sale has come and gone!! Many thanks to everyone who helped--from those who mailed out the packets, manned the phone for sellers, posted the signs, set up and took down, cashiering, tag sorting, room supervising, bagging items ----everyone, no matter how big or how small your job was--you make the sale a success! Items not returned after the sale went to several schools, a Vietnamese family new to our country, Birthright, Monlock House, the Hondurans, Cleveland School and many other deserving places. There is a need for everything somewhere. Donations to the sale are always welcome. Money from these items is all ours. The local VFW Post always donates from their collection-- maternity clothes, girl's, boy's, infant's clothing, shoes and toys. Of all the donations that sold, 95% of them were from the VFW Post and netted for us over $600.00! They always participate and we thank them greatly for their help! The total amount of money for items that were sold was $13,707.94. Money returned to the venders and some expenses totaled $8,692.90, leaving $5,045.04 for the UMW. This money will be used for many mission projects both here and far away. A big thank you goes to Liz and Nancy Owens who put this project together! They always do a wonderful job from start to finish and they hope to see all of you back for another sale in the spring!

PECANS

The UMW is selling pecans again this year. One-pound bags of jumbo shelled pecan halves will be available after October 28th. The cost is $7.50 per pound. Please call Hazel Marshall at (703) 765-3346 if you are interested.

The Cameron UMW annual New Member Dinner will be held on Monday, November 3rd at 6:30 in Skelton Hall. All members, new members and member wannabes are encouraged to come. The Unit meeting will follow dinner. New officers for the coming year will be installed. Sue Boltz will present the program about her recent mission travels. We hope to see YOU there!

The Cameron UMW have elected new officers for 2009-2010. We thank all of those whose terms of office are ending for the fine job they have done in all areas of our organization. We thank these women who have agreed to serve for the coming term: President- Joy Relton, Vice-President- Nancy Owens, Secretary-Dottie Holstine, Treasurer- Dorothy Uhlir, Program Area Coordinators--Spiritual Growth- Barbara Turpin, Education & Interpretation- Donna Grigsby, Secretary of Program Resources- Nancy Williams, Nominating Committee-Shirley Campbell, Chairman, Dixie Goss, Carol Malzahn, Kathy Henry, Carol Settlemyer, Membership Nurture and Outreach-Mary West, Judy Swarthout, Mary Sue Smith, Publicity-Peggy Guggolz and Kitchen-Shirley Campbell. Wow!! What a fine group of leaders! Along with our active membership, we are sure to have a busy and successful UMW. We hope that all of Cameron's women will come and be a part of the journey forward this year!

TRUSTEES

The Trustees have completed renovation of an unused classroom at the end of the hallway in lower Skelton Hall as a permanent storage room for the Trustees, UMW, and others. Kudos go to Gary Lee and Royce Smith for installing the floor beforehand to make final completion possible on Maintenance Day. Any item stored in this room now must be marked with its purpose and person/group responsible for it. Anyone needing a key should contact a Trustee or put a request in the Trustee mail slot.

The carpet at the lower entrance lobby and in the hallway in lower Skelton Hall is very stained and worn. If we have enough assistance at our Maintenance Day on Sat., Nov. 8, we will remove it and prepare the surface for installation of a new carpeted floor. Watch Bulletins for further details.

A special trash pick-up will be scheduled for the week of Nov. 10. Everyone should make an effort to discard all items that have no further use. If you know of an item that needs to be removed at that time and need assistance in doing so, please advise a Trustee.

xmastree.gif (5792 bytes)UMM CHRISTMAS TREE SALE

Preparations for the annual sale of Christmas trees by the Cameron United Methodist Men have already started. The lot will be set up on Saturday, November 22, at 9 a.m. Our one truck load of trees will arrive on Thursday, December 4 at 5:30 p.m., and our sale of trees will begin n Saturday, December 6.

We need the assistance of everyone during these times to prepare for the sale of the trees. During the sale period, volunteers will also be needed to assist the buyers. We will have a sign-up sheet either in the "house" or outside the Sanctuary after services where you can sign up for various time periods. If you would like to reserve your spot ahead of time, or if you have questions, call Dave West at 703-971-5499.

Although there is much work involved in setting up the lot, receiving and selling the trees, and taking the lot back down (on Saturday, December 20 at 9 a.m.), good fellowship is enjoyed by all in the process. This is the only fundraiser conducted by the United Methodist Men of Cameron, and the proceeds are used for many beneficial purposes in the name of all of us.

Spread the word—Cameron is selling Christmas trees!

GoodSearch.gif (7512 bytes)FREE MONEY FOR CAMERON

There is a new search engine called www.Goodsearch.com   that donates 50 percent of its revenue to charities and schools designated by its users. Cameron UMC has been recently registered and money is now accruing. Would you like to help increase that total?

Basically, Goodsearch will donate 1 cent for every search made on behalf of Cameron. A penny does not sound like a lot, but the site is all about numbers—the more supporters we can find for our church who are willing to use Goodsearch for their Internet searches, the more money we will raise. For example, if an organization can rally 500 people to use the search engine, and the users do five Web searches a day, the organization could raise more than $9,000 (500 x 5 x 365). If you have a job that requires you to do lots of Internet searches, you could make a BIG impact on these numbers.

To access the Web site, go to www.goodsearch.com. You will see two windows. In the bottom window, enter "Cameron UMC" (without the quote marks) and then hit the "Verify" button. That will confirm the beneficiary of your searches. Save the page to your Favorites or Bookmarks so it will be easily available to you in the future. The site even features a button (Amount Raised) to check on progress.

Won’t you consider a small change in your Internet habits that could make a significant difference to Cameron?
